The profound (and not deeply understood) role of dosage in medicine
Laurie is delighted to welcome back one of our favorite scholar-practitioners of natural medicine, Dr. Paul Kalnins. With a strong foundation in biomedicine, licenses in naturopathic and Chinese medicine, and extensive training in the anthroposophical approach to living systems, Paul has an unusually broad and thoughtful perspective on what it means and requires for a patient to truly move in the direction of increased health.
Today’s discussion centers on the phenomenon of hormesis, in which substances known to be toxic at higher doses actually stimulate a beneficial effect when ingested at low doses. The consideration of this biological phenomenon raises very important questions about how to dose any medicine (drug, herb, supplement, homeopathic remedy) in order to stimulate a healing response.
Dr. Paul Kalnins is a full-time faculty member at the National College of Natural Medicine, teaching in the Naturopathic Medicine, Classical Chinese Medicine, and Master of Science of Integrative Medicine Research programs.
